The town of Page, AZ. What a great place to be! The views are magnificent, the people are great, and you can have a full blown desert race right in town! What a deal

The Fort McDowell Gran Prix

For the big bikes and quads, this race has turned into a real crowd pleaser and is rumored to continue to change in a good direction. Of course there are always a few who complain on the internet about the short course, yet on race day they are all smiles and throttle. Yavapai Materials does a great job with the dust and the track preparation. The only place where we had dust in the past was out in the narrow desert section. Well, Yavapai Materials stepped up to the plate and hit another home run! They modified the course so their equipment could reach all of it! The desert section resembled a road course, except on dirt. The racers loved it!

Both races were split into two groups; this was also a super idea in my opinion. It thinned out the traffic and kept the dust to a minimum. All the races start out in a land rush style, by class of course, and the thunder could be heard throughout the pit area. This is exactly the kind of course the Pros like; Fast and Furious, with very little dust. The Fort has special meaning for the Mini and Peewee racers as well as their parents. Not only is it a very smooth and fast course, but the folks can see nearly the entire course. So if a little racer hits the ground, its not long before an adult is there to pick them up. This time the course was bladed with most of the mammoth rocks removed. To see all of the action click on the link to your left.

BITD AVI 150, Laughlin, Nevada.

The BITD AVI 150 in Laughlin, Nevada.

It was only a matter of time before someone on the team ventured out to one of the larger desert racing venues. Alan Boughton and Jack Gravel made the leap in a big way! Not only did they go do an out of state, much longer desert race, they signed up in the “Iron man” class. This means they would run the entire race themselves, each on their own machine.

Alan and Jack went to Nevada without pit support from RSD, but in the desert-racing scene its like one big family. They were given pit support by the Eliminator Racing team. They both did very well, with Jack finishing fourth with a race time of 4:58:23. This was only his fourth desert race ever! Alan really turned on the heat and took First Place! His elapsed time was 4:54:06. Nearly five hours in the Nevada desert!

It has sparked other interest in the BITD racing series, so I am sure we will see more RSD Racers on the BITD podiums.

A post race comment from Alan Boughton:

<<<The AVI race was an awesome course, 150 miles of well-marked trail. Some flat out, 5th gear pinned and some technical stuff mixed in, kind of a cross between Snowflake and Vulture.

Even though we we’re racing with Eliminator racing, when the MC on the podium asked me if I wanted to thank anyone my first response was, without even thinking about it, “ I’d really like to thank RSD racing…oh yeah and Eliminator racing as well”. I was the first amateur in with a time of 4:54:06. I hit my wall at 130 miles and @ that point just started rolling the whoops. Jack wasn’t too far behind me with a total time of 4:58:23. Not bad for just his 4th race. His hands were two big blisters.

This has got to be my first race in a year without any mechanical problems, even though my shock had just returned from Elka and was far from dialed in. Jack had the exact same problem with his shock and he toughed it out as well.

Rick Ellsworth got first expert ironman and Todd and Michael Ellsworth took first quad expert team.

BITD really puts on a great race. Very well marked course, a lot of support and recognition from the BITD staff, efficient getting you through registration and tech, and the caliber of racer there is top notch. You have to be good just to race amateur. When you get lapped on your 3rd lap by the lead Pro, you realize just how much room for improvement you have.

We really missed your pitting, nobody pits like you and Cope. You guys really are the best.

We’ll see you at Vulture; by the way I’ll pay for the liquor if you Glenn F’ed up the night before the Vulture race. (Joking).

It sounds as if Alan used this AVI race to help him in his quest to put Glenn in second place!

The RSD Racing Team

R S D Racing was started to give a couple young riders a helping hand in desert racing in Southern Arizona. Bob Copeland and Doug Martin have been involved with motorcycles and quads for many years. With Bob's son Justin and Doug's stepson Steven interested in riding and racing, they set out to make the experience as fun and safe as possible. The team started out with two riders, Justin Copeland on a KX100 and Steven Garcia on a LTZ400. The team has since grown to fourteen riders! This site is dedicated to show the progress of these riders as well as helping others getting started into what has become a whirlwind lifestyle. Bob and Doug offer guidance, pit help, and keep the experience fun for the kids by closely monitoring pit activity.
